Plateau de Bure - Interféromètre

On 1 July 1999, twenty people working at the Plateau de Bure astronomical observatory boarded a cable car gondola belonging to IRAM. After travelling about 500 meters, the gondola detached from the cable and plunged 80 meters onto the rocky slopes below. The gondola disintegrated on impact and all passengers were killed.
