La pointe du Hoc

Unlike most of the places I bring to light, I have never been to the Pointe du Hoc. I learned that it existed while researching locations for the series "Ce que je cache". I started the image in 2023 and it took me a long time to find its key. At first I had the idea of putting the viewer in a pilot's place. At the centre of the image I had placed Hans, a soldier smoking his last cigarette alone in his bunker. He is still there, savouring his last drag. In 2026 I reworked the image, adding a lamp inside every shell crater, its colour varying at random within a preset range running from yellow to red. The colour, the intensity of the light and the texture of the haze make me think of Turner's impressionism.
